I first got them back in 2017. I got them from from a book I borrowed from my sister. I lost my job and about 50 lbs. from all the hard work, but I did it. I got them in June 2017 and by January 2018 I was back at my old place of employment mite free.

I wanted to get rid of them FAST so we went at very aggressively. I tried DE, salt, and Lysol spray in the beginning but it just created a big mess and didn’t work anyway. We lived in a tiny house at the time. The bad thing was we didn’t have running water or electricity. Eventually, all our efforts weren’t working so we abandoned our tiny home and moved into an apartment. That apartment had carpet and so we moved again to one without carpet.

Before moving into the first apartment our lives got very dark for a bit. We had a teenage son, in his last year of high school and we sent him away to live with one of his classmates, ’cause we wanted to keep him safe and he wasn’t being bitten. My ex went to stay with one of my male cousins cause he needed to keep working and my cousin had running water.

My story got strange for awhile. I have a big family and they wanted to help me, most of them didn’t know that they also had been impacted by this point. So we thought if I could get them off me, I could just move into the apartment and life could continue. So we set up a tent in the yard and my one sister found a bath tub that we set up inside the tent. We would run water from inside her nearby trailer (we were in the same yard). We tried the hottest water I could stand with bleach. After moving from that tent into another tent and trying again, we realized it wasn’t working. So then we tried the established medical route. They tried scabies medication and hospitalize me for about 6 days, but that didn’t work either. Of course they thought I was nuts and was suffering from Delusional Parasitosis. I agreed to let the Psychologist test my mental capacity and wouldn’t you know it – he said I was sane. No kidding. We also tried to capture them on tape and send them to a local Epidemiologist but there were never any mites on the tape. Sigh.

We tried all kinds of things like Tea Tree Oil and other essential oils, diatomaceous earth, boric acid, salt, various kinds of epsom salts, hydrogen peroxide (made my ex’s hair blond! hahaha), witch hazel, bleach and a couple other extremely toxic chemicals that people have no business putting on their bodies.

Once I was in the apartment I got rid of my bed and slept on a blow up mat that I could wipe off every morning with about 90% proof alcohol in a spray bottle. I wrapped my pillow in a garbage bag and put the pillow case over that. I washed my bedding & clothing daily, including my washable shoes. I used borax and a cup of ammonia in every load of laundry.

I bought a dehumidifier and kept it running constantly in the main area of the apartment. This was the beginning of the end for the mites I believe.

We sat only on lawn chairs and got rid of most of our belongings. This was over kill btw. We kept our mail and other paperwork in the fridge freezer. Mites do freeze! So this is a good strategy for things you can’t wash down like paper.

I showered in the morning and bathed at night. I used Dawn dish soap only as both shampoo and wash soap.

The most important tools for the environment are as follows. 99% alcohol which I cut with water till it was about 75% proof. I used this in a spray bottle and sprayed down my sleep mat and the tub, toilet and sink and kitchen counters. I wiped them off with paper towels.

I used ammonia that went in the floor wash water (about 1/2 cup for about 3 litres) and in the laundry. Ammonia is strong use a mask to pour it in the water or keep your face turned away as you pour. I used a micro fiber mop and gloves to wring it out before washing the floors & the walls. I washed the entire apartment daily at first. In the beginning twice daily. I was on a mission. Eventually you’ll get back to a normal cleaning routine. That was it for the environment.

On my body I used too many things to mention, but what I believe finally worked were Neem oil (undiluted) and Nustock (cut with Aveeno, about 80/20). Nustock is what farmers put on their livestock when animals get bald patches. I think what is happening to them is a type of mite as well. I used Nustock last and it was the nail on the coffin. We tried Neem before the Nustock came in and I would put it all over my body and sleep that way. When the Nustock came in I switched to that. It took me a long time to get them out of my feet and I would just put Nustock on my feet all day and wear it inside my socks. I did not use Neem and Nustock together. I loved Nustock, cause that is what got them out of my feet. It has sulfur in it and some people might not be able to handle it. If it’s too harsh just use undiluted Neem oil.

My sister and I also bought Structured Silver and that ended everything. When the mites bit us they also deposited a type of bacteria (we believe it is a cousin to the same kind that causes Lime disease). The Structured Silver killed the bacteria and we finally got our lives back. We stopped feeling itching and biting sensations. We used a colloidal silver regime that they use to treat Lime disease. Let me know if you’re going to try it and I’ll send the instructions.

I had abandoned my truck and walked everywhere, but my 4 sisters and 2 grown nieces, who were also impacted (we are a close family), didn’t do half the things I did. They kept their furniture and their vehicles. They just cleaned them like a bugger everyday. Vacuuming and spraying with alcohol.

We all managed to beat the mites and you can too!

My sister Karen is the one who had them first and she suffered the longest. She also had the most money, so she tried lots of the more expensive things like heat treatment in her house, cedar fogging, and other exterminators. None of that worked. The dehumidifier, the alcohol and the ammonia did the trick for the environment. The Neem, Nustock and Structured Silver did the trick for the body.

Good luck everyone! The good news is most of these aren’t expensive. The most expensive thing is the Structured Silver, but you could probably get the same results with a high quality colloidal silver. You drink it.

      Postscript –

In April of 2019 I moved back into my tiny house and the mites were completely gone. We also started using our truck again in the spring of 2018, the mites had died off in the cold. I live in Alberta, Canada so we get some nice cold weather in the winter.

It’s now July 2020 and I was mite free for about 2 years, then I decided I wanted a cat. Back in 2017, that’s how all this mess started by the way. My sister’s cat brought a dead bird to her back door and her dog started playing with it and infected herself and her pups. When it got too cold outside for the puppies my sister had brought them inside and then started getting bites…. Present day, well my cat started going outside and started killing birds and now we have mites again. Sigh. More hard work ahead. BUT I know what I am doing now and I should be mite free again soon. I’ll keep everyone posted.

The Benzoyl Peroxide seems interesting. I wonder how it would work if I cut it with the Nu Stock? Hm…giving me ideas. The coconut oil is good, just messy.

I’m at work right now with Nu Stock on. I had been having better and better days and then starting last Friday the office population seems to have exploded. Probably eggs that hatched from a couple weeks ago. Argh!

My car is quiet and my apartment is fine, it’s just the damned office. I cannot be as aggressive in the office as I would be at home, because I have to be mindful of my coworkers and my files. The carpet at the office is horrible!!!

I am seriously considering buying dry ice. There was a study out of China that indicates CO2 kills 100% of mites if done long enough with the right amount for the space.

@takwakin Deeply appreciate your comprehensive post. Invaluable. Any updates since this second infestation? Also, would you be open to communicating via email? My mother’s experiencing this, and I’m trying to put together a plan for her.

If you’re comfortable with emailing, my email is ponderer75@gmail.com

      Cheers

The products mentioned in the bog for carpets are no longer available anywhere (Sevin 10%). Anyone has beaten these damn mites infested in carpets?

I am also interested in email threads for sharing ideas if we have participation.

Structured Silver – Drink 8 oz. all at once to begin. Then 2 tablespoons twice a day for 3 months. After 3 months drink 2 teaspoons twice a day for maintenance.

I also suggest people join the Bird Mite Sufferers and Survivors Group on FB. Tons of great information!!!

Another thing you can use on your body is Sticky Mix. Mix small handful of Borax laundry soap or Boric acid, with 4 Alka Seltzer tablets (crushed or broken into smaller pieces), then a small amount of boiled water (it will fizz), then 1/4 cup of Glycerin. It cures better on the second day.

I also strongly recommend Eurax lotion from the UK. Use it like scabies protocol. Leave it on for at least 48 hours without showering. It kills mites and eggs. You can use it after initial use as well, for as long as you feel you need it.

I am almost free, but I didn’t leave my job this time and I kept my car, so getting clean is taking longer. Mites like my work laptop, blah. My car is fine though, but I sprayed the heck out of it multiple times with straight ammonia.

      Pandemic Bird Mites

Ever indebted to Takwakin, FinallyFree, CNDNGirl and everyone who posts on this forum.

I think we’ve had a low level of bird mites in our home since 2017-18 (I was getting an occasional bite but thought it was some errant flea from our old dog, now deceased, or random garden bug, which gradually got more noticeable and bothersome over time), but the population exploded in spring 2020 due to many reasons, some of which I’ve learned about here:
      – kept backyard poultry until 2018
      – kept bird feeders/hummingbird feeders very close to front door until 2020
      – in 2017, started a new medication, spironolactone, for blood pressure but it also changes sex hormone levels (used by dermatologists for adult acne)
      – adopted two rescue cats in April 2020 during pandemic lock down, like everyone else, which seemed to be the trigger for our bird mite population explosion or else they just spread the mites throughout the house.

I am the preferred target, but husband still gets some bites (though much less than me) and during the worst of it in the summer 2020, my child also got a few bites (thankfully now seems ignored by the mites). I experience the whole bird mite shebang – slow healing bites, swarming/crawling sensations (scalp, eyes, nose, throat, privates, etc.), high stress/sleep disruption, etc. It is much better now, but the beginning was the living hell that so many have suffered.

This past fall and winter, after all the interventions – removing carpets, decluttering, constant vacuuming/laundry, dehumidfiers (keeping 30% humidity), HEPA air filtering fans (esp blowing across the bed at night), house temp around 68 degrees or below, room ozone shock treatments, Hot Shot No-Pest strips for the car overnight, melting thymol crystals with mug warmers, 99% alcohol sprays, all kinds of cedar oil/neem oil sprays, house fogging (one-time), monthly professional pest spraying service, Bravecto for the cats, change of med for me, months of ivermectin horse paste, daily colloidal silver solution, garlic and MSM pills, Natrum Muriaticum 1 M, homemade anti-mite tea of steeped dried oregano and thyme, neem oil baths (a couple of times), lathering up with medicated Selsun Blue shampoo nightly (wait a few mins before rinsing off), slathering on 100% Neem oil in AM and bedtime, and iodine supplements, etc. – the mite population and my bites have reduced greatly but not gone. (I plan to post again with more detail about what seemed to be most effective after we are further in the clear from this infestation, which I expect to happen later this year- power of positive thinking!)

I also discovered a nearby neighbor also had a mite infestation about 3-4 years ago – it took them 1.5 years (they got rid of all their many houseplants, did constant cedar oil spraying and vacuuming, neem oil baths, Selsun Blue and swear that’s really all they did), but they seem back to normal now (with an occasional bite every month or so). They think it was around March that they noticed the population decreasing. I’ve also read The Year of the Mite (Ishka) and Mites No more (Johnson) – Ishka wrote her mite infestation also started to improve around spring (I could not tell timing from Johnson’s book).

My question is about timing and seasonality. At least two people have noticed their bird mite population decreasing around spring. I am wondering if Takwakin (and anyone else) can remember the time of year that her and her sisters’ mite infestations started to noticeably improve and most importantly, seemed finally ended?

I am also wondering about the hormonal changes that seem to attract the mites – I think both men and women are affected but my impression is that more women than men are attacked – have other noticed this too? I wonder if anyone else has noticed menopausal/thyroid/other hormonal or health changes that might be triggers, like FinallyFree reported?

Thank you all for reading – I hope some of the information is useful to others and I plan to post more on what I think were the most effective interventions for us later on this year. I went through many, many low points as well, and still do, fearing the worst for myself and family, but thanks to reading many other people’s stories, supportive family, twice daily transcendental meditation (VERY challenging with crawling sensations going on I will say, but it gave me the mental resilience I needed), I am feeling closer to ending this infestation. I pray that all others going through this horrendous experience may also have all the support they need to overcome their battles as well.
